From Liz - take me out to the qiu game!

I can't do a better job than this NYT article (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/16/sports/baseball/16china.html) at describing this Saturday's baseball game between the LA Dodgers and San Diego Padres here in beautiful Beijing.  It was apparently the first time in history that Major League Baseball has played in China, a country that apparently only has 100 baseball diamonds, total.

Yesterday was beautiful:  cherry blossoms in bloom, the crystal blue sky dotted with rare poofy white clouds:  the perfect day to sit in a Division III college sized baseball stadium and watch two professional teams up close and personal, with a handful of non-comprehending Chinese fans and a sizable chunk of Americans who were mostly there to see each other and enjoy the sunshine.  At Wukesong Stadium, you could forget about the other breaking news going on in China right now (that I don't feel comfortable writing about on a blog or even email), and instead focus on the animated hot dogs racing each other across the Jumbotron, the inflatable Padres' friar mascot dancing with minimalistically-clad Chinese cheerleaders, the programs that didn't even list the team's lineup, and every once in a while, the game itself.  My favorite part of the afternoon, which the article left out, was when the bleacher creatures started the Wave.  I didn't expect that, especially since none of the other attempts to rally up the fans seemed to work.  But there it went, looping around the entire stadium two or three times, and even getting the normally too-cool VIP section to join in.

It was so odd being there, as baseball is an American sport, like apple pie is an American pie.  No one at the game I talked to thinks that baseball will take off in this country, with reasons given ranging from poverty (requires too much equipment), land constraints (requires a specialized field), image (too clean cut -- Chinese students prefer the counter-culture of tough guy basketball), or even tensions with Japan (where the baseball is well loved).

But we'll see.  Baseball is a game of patience, and we're only in the bottom of the first.

Cheers,

Liz

Orangutan in Microsoft Cafeteria

Disposable Utensils
Are Target of Protest;
Angry Ape Weighs In

By JANE SPENCER
February 8, 2008; Page A1

BEIJING -- A dozen environmental activists stormed the cafeteria of Microsoft Corp.'s Chinese headquarters on a lunchtime mission to change the way 1.3 billion people pick up their noodles.

As startled diners looked up from their pork fried rice, Cao Yu, a 26-year-old activist dressed as an endangered orangutan spoke passionately about the ecological perils of China's most common eating utensil.

"Disposable chopsticks are destroying China's forests," said Mr. Cao, whose voice was muffled by the 2-foot-high ape head he was wearing. "We must protest this pointless waste!"

Disposable chopsticks are under attack all across China.

Beijing Obama

May go to this, not sure:

As promised, we have put together a Get Out the Vote party to register people for the Global Democratic Primary, which takes place from February 5-12th.

This event is being sponsored by Americans Abroad for Obama but we encourage all Democrats, Independents and waivering Republicans to come along and join us for free pizza and beer at Kro's Nest (inside the north gate of Worker's Stadium) on January 29th between 7 and 10pm.

Please take a look at the attached flyer for more details and feel free to pass out and spread the word freely.  We will also have limited-edition Americans in China for Obama tee-shirts for sale.

If you cannot attend or would like to register ahead of the party, please do so now at http://www.democratsabroad.org/user/register.  The deadline to register is January 30th.

Also, I have included below some answers to frequently asked questions about the global primary that our fellow Obama supporters in Shanghai have put together.

Please do email me with any other questions you may have. We hope to see you there!

Best, Erin

This year expats will be allocated 22 delegates in a Global Primary (that's almost the same number as Nevada, which just held its caucuses!).   Below are some questions you may have, together with answers (see http://www.democratsabroad.org/article/2008/01/11/delegate-selection-plan-summary-pdf-document for more information about Democrats Abroad and the Global Primary)

What is the Democrats Abroad Global Primary?

The Democrats Abroad Global Presidential Primary will take place from February 5-12, 2008 with voting by Internet, mail, fax, and in person at Voting Centers in more than 30 countries around the world.

If you're registered to vote back in your home state, can you vote in the Democrats Abroad Global Primary?

This primary takes place alongside state primaries being held throughout the United States. As an American citizen living abroad you have the option of voting in the Democrats Abroad Global Presidential Primary or in a state presidential primary.

Why not vote back home?

Overseas voters are encouraged to participate in the Democrats Abroad Global Presidential Primary because:
• Democrats Abroad have facilitated the process of overseas voting in the Global Presidential Primary by allowing voting by Internet and in person.
• Given this year's early primary schedule, ballots requested may not arrive in time to complete and return.
• If your voting state votes by caucus, you would have to fly home to participate!
• Your vote will count alongside those of other members of Democrats Abroad towards the allocation of Democrats Abroad's 22 delegates to the Democratic National Convention. As such, your individual vote carries significantly more weight than a vote in a state primary or caucus.

What is the impact on my state registration?

*If you participate in the Democrats Abroad Global Presidential Primary, you may not vote for President in your voting-state primary or caucus. (Your "voting state" is the last place you resided before departing the US. If you never resided in the US, most states will accept the last place your parent(s) resided. Contact Democrats Abroad or your local voting registrar for details if required.)
*You may choose to request a primary ballot and vote for other offices on your voting-state primary ballot.

How do I register to vote in the general election?

You should register to vote in the general elections, you can do that now by completing your online ballot request at www.VoteFromAbroad.org .

Hong Kong may have the world's freest economy, but its oppressed citizens cannot spit in restaurants, cut in line or buy a beer for a quarter. That's why a few brave residents of the Fragrant Harbor are venturing to Beijing this weekend, to celebrate the liberties that we in the capital enjoy--and celebrate Sarabeth's birthday.

Please join their freedom struggle.

Festivities begin 9:30 p.m. this Saturday, Jan. 26, at #11 Dongsisitiao (东四四条), a hundred yards or so west of the intersection of Chaoyangmen beixiaojie (朝阳门北小街). Call Austin at 1391 167 9142 or Sarabeth at 1352 299 0427 with any questions. Let freedom ring.

My ART

Can I please share my latest source of excitement?  I was talking yesterday about this piece that I bid on at the Dartmouth Event on Monday.  I love it, do you want to take a look? http://www.flickr.com/photos/numbers/378158495/

It’s from a series called “Numbers” by Oak Taylor Smith where he photographs walls around Beijing where the special government office of wall painting has painted over numbers for illegal services.  He writes about it and shows the other items in the collection in a full document posted online.

My Second Mobile Monday

A week ago...

Our very best mobile wishes for the New Year! With the Olympics just a few months away, we expect many changes to happen in 2008.
For this 17th session to be held on January 14 at OrangeLabs' Innovation Gardens, we invited Tomi Ahonen, best-selling author and strategy consultant for digital convergence and advanced mobile telecoms to tell us about how mobile is not just the evil little brother of Internet, but a full-fledged 7th Media. We are flying Tomi from his newfound home in Hong Kong to share his insights in this keynote session.
Tomi is the closest you can get to an encyclopedia of best practices in mobile services and can deliver more strategic insights in an hour than if you spend a month on Baidu Zhidao. Without further ado, let us introduce our first speaker for the New Year:
Tomi T. Ahonen | Best-selling Author and Strategy Consultant | www.tomiahonen.com

Tomi Ahonen is the author of five bestsellers and an advisor to the telecoms, IT and media industries. He lectures at Oxford University's courses on 3G telecoms, digital convergence and social networking, has been quoted in over 200 press stories and has presented papers to over 180 conferences.
His client list includes Ericsson, Orange, Motorola, Nokia, DoCoMo, Siemens, TeliaSonera and Vodafone. Mr. Ahonen consults for telecoms, industry analysts, the venture capital community and other parties involved in understanding the profit potential of wireless. A new services evangelist, Tomi has discussed over 1000 existing mobile concepts in his presentations and his books detail over 500 examples.

Saturday Night

Bringing the Annual Black and White Holiday Party to Beijing for the first time...

There will be a Christmas tree. There will be a Menorah. There will be lots to drink. And that sounds like a good enough excuse for a party. Join us on December 15th for a holiday party at Ward's apartment.

Come dressed in your best black and white- Ya Xiu's finest or your own. See you there!

Directions: Ward's apartment is at GongTi West Gate (Gong Ti Xi Men) in the Guangcai International Mansions.  It is just south of Green T. House and Bellagio in the large apartment complex with 4 high-rise towers.  To get there walking south on Gongtixilu, pass by the strip of bars and clubs on your left (Babyface, Angel, Bellagio, Green T. House), a small alley, and then turn left into what looks like a driveway into the Guangcai International Mansions.  Walk through the underground parking area to the second building on the left, Building 4, Apt 6D.  And call us if you get lost!

Mobile Monday

What I did yesterday:
Operating a mobile business in China is not for the faint hearted, as repeatedly illustrated the profiles of NASDAQ-listed value-added service providers during the past two years.

Though a heated debate is going on between the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) and telecom operators, WVAS SPs often feel they have to face them both as primary and ’secondary’ regulators, and are left adrift in an increasingly tough sea of changes.

This #15 session on 22 October will look into how mobile CEOs cope with the situation in their day-to-day navigation, and define what is the essence of the CEO’s role:

* how to manage growth or scale back when new policies cut the wind,
* how to generate revenues,
* how to motivate and keep people on board,
* how to handle investors and partners.

:: Register ::
Participation fee: 100 rmb
(payment is at the door and includes light buffet)
:: Access map ::
:: Tell a friend ::
:: Who came last time ::

Attendance is limited to 150 participants so we recommend to register early. As usual, doors open at 7pm and we start sharp at 7.30pm.

We invited early stage and more mature companies to share their insights, offering a local and international perspective on China’s mobile market.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Ted Plafker arrived in Beijing in March, 1989 and, with his university
degree in Russian studies, did not expect to stay long.  But as an aspiring
journalist, he found his timing could not have been better.  He took spot
jobs in various news bureaus during that very hectic spring and summer, and
soon began contributing to the South China Morning Post.  In the following
years he became a somewhat promiscuous freelancer, stringing for, among
others, The Boston Globe, the San Francisco Examiner, Science Magazine, the
San Francisco Chronicle, The Independent, National Geographic, the
Chronicle of Higher Education, Far Eastern Economic Review China
Trade  Reports, the Washington Post, and International Herald Tribune.  He is
currently accredited as a correspondent in the Beijing bureau of The
Economist, where he began contributing in 1994.
He lives in Beijing with his wife, business woman Roberta Lipson, and sons
Jonathan, Daniel and Benjamin.  "Doing Business in China" is his first book.
