The latest NY Times Article to stir up some heat notes that women are leaving men in the dust in college in terms of grades and matriculation.  The article references 2 interesting ideas:

 

1. The phenomenon of the young man who feels he is entitled to a good job, and simultaneously withdraws from the world and puts low effort into studies or duties.

 

2. That this is such a big deal is kinda silly.  Sara Mead, the author of a report for Education Sector (one of the D.C. area think tanks) suggested that the heightened concern might in part reflect the ill-at-ease feeling people have about women's achievement.

 

Other interesting factoids:

Harvard accepts women/men in proportion to their application rates.  If there 60% female applicants, then the incoming class is roughly 60% female.

 

Brown University likes boys.  Men made up less than 40% of the applicants, but 47% of the admitted.

 

Engineering schools still slant heavily towards men, especially graduate programs.
